Well, I’m reaching the halfway mark of this project and I think I might be a little behind. I think that since I’m working on learning one entire song, that’s been my main focus (along with learning chords, strum patterns, how to tune, etc.). So, I think that while I am continuing to learn ‘wish you were gay’ by Billie Eilish, I’ll also try to throw in some smaller songs that I can work on just for practice and to get better.

So, I figured since I’m currently working on learning ‘wish you were gay’ by Billie Eilish, I would plug in the chords, strumming patterns, and how much progress I’ve got done on the song!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VERSE STRUMMING PATTERN: down, mute, down, mute, down, mute, down, mute CHORUS STRUMMING PATTERN: down down, mute, down down, mute, down down, mute, down down down down CHORDS NEEDED (throughout the entire song): G, Em, Gmaj7, d/f#, D7, Am -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, I’ve got the verses down and complete. But, I’m struggling with the chorus.. Specifically the build-up and also switching between chords fast enough to keep myself in rhythm and timing. And I’m also having trouble switching between some certain chords. But other than that, I think it’s coming together pretty well! My girlfriend is an awesome guitar player so she is also helping me with this project. I do not know whether I am going to use it or not, but my dad has sent me the login information for the Fender Play thing. But, I haven’t looked into it yet. So, I might work on that a little bit later and see if I want to use it or not! But other than that, I’m going to continue working on ‘wish you were gay’ and also maybe learn some smaller songs for some additional practice. It is week 3! And I have made a very drastic decision in terms of my final product - I have decided I am not going to make a video compiling all of my progress. This is for multiple reasons: it would be way too long, I would not be able to fit everything in and it still be in a reasonable time frame, it would likely be very awkward, and I honestly have been forgetting to film myself when practicing or trying out new things because I have been so focused on actually doing it.
Also, I have given up on learning ‘worldstar money’ by Joji since the majority of the song is like beats and created instrumental and there isn’t much guitar, except the first like 10 seconds (which is what I learned). But, I have started up on learning ‘wish you were gay’ by Billie Eilish since that’s fairly guitar centered (both the demo from 2017 and the official song from 2019). I’ve got the chords and the strumming patterns down, but I’m having a little trouble when it comes to switching between chords while keeping the rhythm and strumming pattern in time with the song. I think I’ll film myself performing multiple songs to show my final progress and ‘wish you were gay’ might be one of them! There’s some other songs I would like to learn, but I need to see how difficult they are. Some examples are: ‘TV’ by Billie Eilish, ‘hostage’ by Billie Eilish, ‘i love you’ by Billie Eilish, etc. And in case you couldn’t tell, my favorite artist is Billie Eilish :). But, this could change by the end of my project.. We’ll just have to wait and see what I end up doing and hopefully it’ll turn out well! My dad has gone ahead and lent me one of acoustic guitars. It’s a Taylor and I believe it’s priced somewhere between $600 and $700. Since I have some prior experience with guitar, he didn’t think I needed a beginners guitar (and I agree) and he gave me one of his best ones, which I kind of expected. As soon as I had the guitar in my hands, I immediately started playing some strumming patterns and some chords I already knew. I forgot how much I loved playing guitar up until that moment.
Once I got back to my mom’s, I started doing some research on simple basic chords that aren’t too difficult to learn. After that, I looked through some tips on things you should and shouldn’t do and how to keep your guitar in good shape. So to sum up all my progress so far, I’ve learned some simple chords and I’m working on learning strumming patterns. Also, the brand Fender has a program called Fender Play, which is lessons on how to play guitar and it can be very specific and have a lot of helpful details and tips! My dad and step-mom have a subscription to it so they’re going to let me use it :). In terms of other progress, I’ve started learning ‘worldstar money (interlude)’ by Joji. My girlfriend also plays the guitar (she’s absolutely incredible at it) and she recommended this as an easy, simple song that she thinks I will be able to get pretty quickly. So far, I’ve got the strumming pattern down and about the first 15-20% of the song down (in terms of chords). With help from her, my dad, all the research I’ve done online, and the Fender Play program, I think I should be able to get this project going smoothly and hopefully start seeing some progress in the next couple of weeks! |
