My dad has gone ahead and lent me one of acoustic guitars. It’s a Taylor and I believe it’s priced somewhere between $600 and $700. Since I have some prior experience with guitar, he didn’t think I needed a beginners guitar (and I agree) and he gave me one of his best ones, which I kind of expected. As soon as I had the guitar in my hands, I immediately started playing some strumming patterns and some chords I already knew. I forgot how much I loved playing guitar up until that moment.
Once I got back to my mom’s, I started doing some research on simple basic chords that aren’t too difficult to learn. After that, I looked through some tips on things you should and shouldn’t do and how to keep your guitar in good shape. So to sum up all my progress so far, I’ve learned some simple chords and I’m working on learning strumming patterns. Also, the brand Fender has a program called Fender Play, which is lessons on how to play guitar and it can be very specific and have a lot of helpful details and tips! My dad and step-mom have a subscription to it so they’re going to let me use it :). In terms of other progress, I’ve started learning ‘worldstar money (interlude)’ by Joji. My girlfriend also plays the guitar (she’s absolutely incredible at it) and she recommended this as an easy, simple song that she thinks I will be able to get pretty quickly. So far, I’ve got the strumming pattern down and about the first 15-20% of the song down (in terms of chords). With help from her, my dad, all the research I’ve done online, and the Fender Play program, I think I should be able to get this project going smoothly and hopefully start seeing some progress in the next couple of weeks!

For my Genius Hour project, I want to learn how to play the guitar! I've always had a love for music and I've sort of been surrounded by it my entire life (my Dad is able to play a bunch of instruments). And I've always wanted to learn how to play an instrument except I've never had the motivation nor the time to do it, but now I do
First of all, I need to borrow a guitar from my dad. After that, I've decided to split all of my work into four three-week segments. In the first cluster, I'll get familiar with the guitar and learn all the basics (strings, chords, etc.) Then in the next two clusters, I'll work on trying to learn some songs, read music correctly, and start getting a song picked out for my final performance video. And in the last cluster, I'll put my video together showing all my progress, keep practicing, and also filming myself performing the song(s) I picked out! Like I said before, I'll put together a video showing all of my progress from start to finish. I'm also planning on playing a song or two that'll be filmed and shown to the class as my final presentation! As of right now, I'm just gonna focus on learning songs I already know/do covers and maybe in the future I can possibly try and compose some of my own music! First, I’m going to try and get an acoustic guitar from my dad – he has a BUNCH. Then, I’ve done some research and found some websites with tips, lessons, etc. So I will go off of them for the first week or 2, then I’ll move to getting a little more advanced. That’s the current goal for about the first 3 or 4 weeks. |
